As the list of my favoriteprograms for Linux I have made a similar one for Windows. The list is a bit longer, but this is mostly due to Windows not providing any useful tools from the beginning. This list is also very useful when debugging virus infected/mysteriously slow computer: Startup Applications List

Open source software

• TightVNC [Open Source]
  A opensource VNC viewer.
• Create Synchronicity [Open Source]
  Create Synchronicity is a powerful and lightweight open source backup and synchronization tool, available in many languages.
• Putty [Open Source]
  Since Windows doesn’t provide a decent shell or SSH client for that matter – this is the best SSH client I know.
• Xming [Open Source]
  Free X-server for Windows.
• VLC [Open Source]
  Free and awesome media player.
• Firefox [Open Source]
  Firefox. Enough said.
• 7-zip [Open Source]
  Instead of wasting money on Winrar or Winzip this is a free and excellent alternative.
• Gimp [Open Source]
  Covers all my photo editing needs –

• InfraRecorder [Open Source]
  Free CD/DVD burner tool. Replaces Nero.
• gkrellm [Open Source]
  The classic monitoring tool from Linux compiled for Windows.
• UltraDefrag [Open Source] open source licensed defragmentation tool for windows.
• LightScreen [Open Source] A small and good open source screen capture program.
• WinDirStat [Open Source]
  Visual representation of the hard disk usage. Very useful for finding a space hogger.
• KeePass [Open Source]
  Password manager.
• DBAN [Open Source]
  Secure wiping of hard drives.
• Vim for Windows [Open Source]
  The one and only editor.
• VirtualBox [Open Source]
  Great visualization software. Great for trying out new distros
• Cygwin [Open Source]
  Make Windows somewhat useful by adding a shell with bash support.
• Softsqueezebox
  A software squeezebox client for Linux, OS X and Windows. For Windows 7, see how-to-fix-missing-msvcr71dll-problem-in-windows
• Console
  Console is a Windows console window enhancement. Console features include: multiple tabs, text editor-like text selection, different background types, alpha and color-key transparency, configurable font, different window styles.

Closed sourced software

• Ninite
  Automated installer of all my favorite programs
• Secunia Personal Software Inspector A small program to check if all the common programs are updated and patched.
• Spybot
  Recommendable anti-spyware.
• Microsoft security essentials
  Surprisingly lightweight and non-intrusive free virus/firewall tool from Microsoft.
• TeamViewer
  TeamViewer is a solution for remote control, desktop sharing and file transfer that works behind firewalls and NAT proxy.
