YABI – Yet Another Boids Implementation (simulation of flocking animals)

Just before I started my paternity leave I saw a documentary about flocking animals and how these can be modeled in computer simulation. I found it very exciting and eagerly thought I could implement a simulation in a days work. I, however, quite underestimated the free time available while on paternity leave and the project extended in to many pieces spread over a few weeks. First a little teaser from the animation I made using python and Matplotlib, where the Boids (birds, fish or flying sheep ..) are in blue and predators are in red:

My master thesis: Receiver function modeling

Introduction
After many years of studies I have finally finished my degree in geophysics from the University of Copenhagen. It all ended when I handed in my thesis the 15 December and defended it the 5 February. The thesis can be downloaded here: thesis.pdf (11 mb)

Viscous fingers on old speakers

Saturday night Martin P. Haspang, Kåre H. Jensen and I played around with cornstarch and water. Mixed together this will create a non-newtonian fluid. This fluid appears almost solid when high stresses are applied such as a hit with a finger or spoon. With lower stresses the fluid will behave as a fluid. In this video my girlfriend demonstrating the features of the fluid:

Presentations with LaTeX beamer class – KU style

Impressive presentation using pdf and pythonWhat is LaTeX beamer class?
The Beamer class is used to make presentation in LaTeX. This gives you the power of regular LaTeX with great math rendering and a easy support of vector graphics into your presentation. Beamer class presentations appear very structured when compared to the common PowerPoint presentation in my view.

This small article does not aim to learn anybody how to use beamer but merely to present to examples which can be hacked. Underneath each of pictures the code and the PDF is presented.

Two recent presentations made with Beamer
In this fall I made two presentation using Beamer. One for physics students about to pick the subject for the bachelor project and one to present a topic of choice for everyone interested.
